Fort William Saint Mirren

By Stuart Gillespie
Sunday, 30th November 2003
Doesn't quite have the same ring to it as Paisley Saint Mirren does it? Yet according to a contestant on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" last night, St. Mirren don't play in Paisley but actually Fort William.
The question, for £16,000, was this: "In which town do the Scottish football team St. Mirren play?" and the options being Arbroath, Oban, Fort William and Paisley. With only a 50/50 left (using both the phone a friend and ask the audience to find out that Spa is in Belgium, which any F1 fan can tell you), he used it and was left with Fort William and Paisley. Amazingly he went for Fort William!

Now, obviously I'd know the answer to that, but I'd feel quite confident if asked where an English side which had a name like that played. Perhaps they should have asked where Grimsby Town play, as they in fact play in Cleethorpes and not Grimsby. The bloke was Welsh so I'll let him off.

This is not the first time Saints have caused folk problems in a quiz. On "A Question of Sport" a few years ago, a question during the one minute round was "Which Scottish football team has the nickname The Buddies". Despite having former Sellick manager John Barnes in their team, they couldn't get it!

On a Paisley related note, a contestant was once asked "In which city would you find Paisley Gilmour Street station". The person answered something like Cardiff, whilst the show claimed it was in Glasgow! Hmmm.

Of course, the one time you don't want a Saints releated question to appear is when it's your brothers shot on the computer version of Millionaire :-)
